As I was walking to St. Ives, I saw a man on his hands and knees picking weeds. It seemed both charming and tranquilizing, and as I looked over his shoulder to the remaining yard, also seemed futile. I imagined trying to pick weeds in a field; it would take an army. Suddenly it occurred to me it would be an image of the middle class now.
